POLISH PIEROGI WORKSHOP
You’ll start the Pierogi class with a warm borscht broth, then dive into learning how to make several traditional fillings including:
- Farmer’s cheese with potato & onion
- Savoury sauerkraut with mushroom & onion
- Sweet prunes, for delicious dessert pierogi!
Our fillings consist of just the various vegetables, fruit or dairy ingredients. There are no meat products included.
Maria will demonstrate the making & kneading of the dough, then provide individual amounts for each person to work with. She will provide fillings, outlining their preparation, sharing years of tips and tricks and together we will make trays of pierogi, fit for a king or queen!
Singing while making food, or indeed during any work, is a deeply Polish tradition. While guests work, Maria will sing a traditional folk song or two!
The workshop finishes with a communal meal. You’ll get a chance to try all your creations in class with a sour cream and warm caramelized onion topping. Extra Polish side dishes pre-made by Maria are also served and guests will be taking their own pierogi home (if you can resist eating them on the way 😉
The Depanneur is a delightfully informal and charming venue downtown, just east of College & Dufferin. Founded in 2011 by Len Senater, it is a very special place to Maria - it's where she hosted her first workshops and drop-in dinners! The Dep (as it is known to its regulars) is a run with strong collaborative and community-oriented approach - Len is involved in Newcomer Kitchen
, is a nonprofit organization that invites Syrian refugee women to cook a weekly meal in the Dep's kitchen. The meals are sold online for pickup or delivery, and the proceeds shared among the cooks. Their goal is to create a model that can be replicated with any newcomer group, in any restaurant kitchen, in any city in the world.
See you there!
