In this fun, hands-on workshop, Maria Rozynska leads you through the process of kneading & rolling, filling & shaping, and boiling & frying traditional Polish pierogi from scratch.
POLISH PIEROGI WORKSHOP
We’ll start the Pierogi class with a cool cup of kompot, a traditional sweet Polish beverage prepared from several kinds of dried fruit, then dive into learning how to make several traditional fillings including:
- Farmer’s cheese with potato & onion
- Savoury sauerkraut with mushroom & onion
- Sweet prunes, for delicious dessert pierogi!
Our fillings consist of just the various vegetables, fruit or dairy ingredients. There are no meat products included.
Maria will demonstrate the making & kneading of the dough, then provide individual amounts for each person to work with. She will provide fillings, outlining their preparation, sharing years of tips and tricks and together we will make trays of pierogi, fit for a king or queen!
Singing while making food, or indeed during any work, is a deeply Polish tradition. While guests work, Maria will sing a traditional folk song or two!
The workshop finishes with a communal meal with LIVE folk music performance by members of Polky Village Band while you eat! You’ll get a chance to try all your creations in class with a sour cream and warm caramelized onion topping. Extra Polish side dishes pre-made by Maria are also served and guests will be taking their own pierogi home (if you can resist eating them on the way 😉
LIVE FOLK MUSIC with the POLKY VILLAGE BAND:
The Polky Band, led by Ewelina Ferenc are one of the GTA's premier folk music bands, playing a wide range of traditional music and instruments. They will take you on a musical journey to Eastern and Central Europe, in which you hear Carpathian, Jewish, Gypsy, Ukrainian, Slovak and Hungarian influences!
While we make and then later eat our creations, guests will enjoy a delightful performance by Polky Village Band.
"The Polky Village Band are a professional Polish folk band in Toronto. They perform traditional Polish folk songs and dances using traditional Polish instruments: hammer dulcimer, fiddle, accordion, tapan & Polish frame drum. They have played at numerous cultural events in the GTA. Most of their repertoire is comprised of songs that singer Ewelina Ferenc learned growing up in Poland. With lively songs they can move to dance even those with two left feet!" ~Polky Village Band website.
