DATE CHANGED: now FEB 10th!
Ahh Valentine's Day, or Walentynki (vah-len-TIN-kee), a time to give gifts to those we love. And what better way to show that gratitude than learning how to cook for your loved ones 🙂
This is a lively hands-on cooking workshop followed by a candlelit dinner as well as recipes and, of course, leftovers to take home!
As usual, Maria will sing traditional songs while we work. Then during the communal meal the Polky Village Band will play some lovely romantic Polish folk songs!
We’ll start the Valentine's Pierogi class with a warm borscht broth, then dive into learning how to make several traditional fillings including:
There will also be a short presentation on Polish cuisine. Afterwards we roll up our sleeves and dive into learning how to make that perfect Polish pierogi. Maria will demonstrate the making & kneading of the dough. She will provide individual amounts for each person to work with. She will also provide fillings, demonstrating their preparation and together we will make trays of pierogi, fit for a king or queen!
Gluten-free pierogi are just as tasty as regular pierogi. There is a small amount of extra effort required, especially in getting the dough just right. However if you are allergic or simply want to reduce your wheat diet, then these recipes are perfect for you.
Maria uses a dough made with Bob's Red Mill "Gluten-Free All Purpose Baking Flour". It works perfectly. Her fillings consist of just various vegetables, fruit or dairy ingredients. There are no meat products included.
During the online booking process there will be an opportunity to indicate your preference for Gluten-free or Regular. This will help Maria prep the type and amounts of dough for the workshop.
PLEASE NOTE: This workshop will have both gluten-free and regular dough in the same room. The doughs are prepared separately, on different days and are stored in separate containers. Despite all this, naturally cross-contamination is still possible. Anyone with a severe gluten reaction should be aware of these facts before signing up for this workshop. Singing while making food, or indeed during any work, is a deeply Polish tradition. While we make and then later eat our creations, guests will enjoy a delightful performance by Polky Village Band.
"The Polky Village Band are a professional Polish folk band in Toronto. They perform traditional Polish folk songs and dances using traditional Polish instruments: hammer dulcimer, fiddle, accordion, tapan & Polish frame drum. They have played at numerous cultural events in the GTA. Most of their repertoire is comprised of songs that singer Ewelina Ferenc learned growing up in Poland. With lively songs they can move to dance even those with two left feet!" ~Polky Village Band website
The workshop finishes with a communal meal. Maria will provide extra Polish side dishes, each one with a strong Polish theme and history. Naturally, there will also be sour cream and warm caramelized onion toppings. Guests will take their own creations home with them (if you can resist eating them on the way ;).
See you soon!
